there were actually two runs of these picture discs, first run has the stones picture on one side and ten yearts after on the other side with various cuts of non stones music to test the sound quality. This was the first run. After the test was done a second run was done that has the Through the Past darkly music on both sides. I have one of the first run and one of the second run. I am willing to sell at this point. My father was the president of the company that produced these prototypes,

    1. Welcome Tmanblues!
      Thank You Kindly...
I´m really glad about all the info considering this prototype.
You and your knowledge are needed in this site, intentionally made to uncover some less-known releases at first, now it´s a Work-In-Progress blog with some collaborations here and there.
I doubt I can afford your proposal by now, but if you have a nice photo(s) of this pict disc, I know 2/3 Stones collectors who´ll love to have one of those and I can post it in here with your contact if you will.
      Best regards

  2. Tman knows of which he speaks. His father would frequently come home with test discs, new artists, etc. and he gave one of those first run Stones discs to me, too. However, I sold mine during the hey-day of picture disc collecting. My memory says that we were told seven discs in total were made, not fifteen. Apparently, these were created to test a way to graphically imprint the disc, negating the need for costly exterior packaging. Unfortunately, the lamination technology was not up to the task at that point in time; it would be a decade before picture disc technology was mastered.

    1. Hi Sixtiestoyguy!
Great to have you also! Thanks for the extra info, I´m sure Stones fans will appreciate it.
From the beginning my main gold for this blog is exactly what you´ve done, to fill the gaps in this on-going project.
I´ve started this, because I´d realized how much digital info/pictures gathered thru the years were unclassified and scattered.
Beside my really humble Stones collection (nowadays more vinyl than CDs in all formats, promos, books/programes and very few memorabilia, I did sold a lot of Stones items also long time ago, and now I regret it), I´d the luck to had some collectors/artists precious collaboration in some chapters.
You´re welcome, anything I can help just say.
      All the best

I believe there were a total of 15 between the first run and second run. The problem was that it was basically a cardboard picture unnder the clear vinyl and the clear vinyl did not hold the quality of the music, which is why the project was scrapped in favor of the octogon album cover. A little Sticky Fingers album trivia for you as well. The manufacturer had to pay employees to pull the zipper half way down on the paints of the Sticky Finger album so that the zipper would not cut into the music grooves on the album. Haqlf way down put the zipper on the label and their was a problem with the female emplyees/ union over this. It was resolved and the zipper came half way down, but it was interesting for the times.

half -nanker, I am curious how you knew about the Stones prototype Through the Past darly picture disc. Sixtiestoyguy and I were best friends growing up, but lost touch with one another over the years. We connected back due to facebook recently. I have been looking for someone, anyone who had heard of this project for years. Email me at my email address and I will send you pictures. My dad worked in the music industry for over 40 years and I worked in it for around 25 years, like father like son. I have many vinyl collectables in my 5000 record collection. It is not bad, but not as much as many.

  6. Is this web page still maintained and do you still keep track of these discs? I have had one of the Prototype 2 discs since the late 90's. I always wondered if it was real as I have never seen or heard of another of this type until I found this web page. Would not mind getting in contact with other owners or collectors.
